Indonesia ranks fifth as the country with the highest number of premature babies in the world and preterm birth is identified as the largest contributor to infant mortality.
Based on data from BPS 2016, infant mortality (IMR) reached 25 deaths per 1,000 babies born. This is the concern of various parties because the IMR becomes one indicator of the health level of a country. “The decline in IMR is one indicator of health development.
Newborn mortality has a share of 54.9% of all infant mortality so that the survival of newborns is still the focus of the Ministry of Health, “said Dr. Eni Gustina MPH, Director of Family Health Kemenkes RI, in the event Revealing Recent Technology to Suppress Infant Mortality Rate in Indonesia held by GE Healthcare.
On the occasion, GE Healthcare introduces premium incubator facilities and hybrid incubators along with high-tech heating for premature baby care.
As Nilesh Shah, General Manager of Clinical Care Solutions at GE Healthcare Africa, India and Southeast Asia, said, “Innovation to provide solutions to reduce IMR in Indonesia and around the world is very important and we continue to work with customers to meet this challenge.
Currently GE Healthcare’s premium facilities are available in a number of hospitals in various provinces such as Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, and others.
“GE Healthcare continues to seek the availability of our treatment facilities to reach more areas in Indonesia to meet the intensive services needed for premature infants to stabilize them,” Nilesh said.
Meanwhile, drRinawati Rohsiswatmo SpA (K), from the Department of Children’s Health RSCM, said, premature babies born with gestational age less than 37 weeks. Premature baby care is categorized quite complicated because of the high risk that can occur early in the baby’s life.
“Caring for a premature baby is very important to have a broad knowledge, patience, and skills of the person who handles it. In addition, premature infant care sometimes requires a complete facility and sophisticated technology in NICU care until the baby meets the criteria prescribed medically, “he said.
The main causes of infant mortality are low birth weight infants (LBW), including prematurity, followed by asphyxia and infection. The decrease in neonatal mortality rate (AKN) begins with promotive and preventive efforts before pregnancy, during pregnancy, delivery at health facilities and essential neonatal health services according to the standard.
Babies born with LBW / premature conditions are treated with kangaroo and management methods in accordance with the conditions and complications experienced. Based on the Indonesian Demographic Health survey of 2012, AKN is 19 per 1,000 live births that have tended to stagnate since a decade earlier. From regular reports recorded in the first half of 2017 there were 10,294 cases or 22 infant deaths per 1,000 births.
